Staying healthy at a mile high

Denver is an active city with a lot of choices for outdoor recreation — we’ve detailed eight great opportunities here. It is also located one mile above sea level, and the air is thinner and likely much, much dryer than where you live.

The first thing Denverites tell you: Drink water. All the time. You may think you’ll get along just fine drinking when you’re thirsty, but listen. Please drink more water. Your body will thank you in the morning.

And ONA will work to make this as easy as possible. Water stations will be set up across the conference, and thanks to sponsor Viafoura, there will be fruit-infused water bottles in the hydration lounge if you want a spark in your H2O. See them in the Centennial Foyer, outside of the keynote ballrooms.

Other ways to stay active at ONA16:

Yoga w/o a mat: ONA and SocialFlow are hosting a yoga session Friday morning on the Denver City Terrace. This will be a chair/standing yoga class, appropriate for a range of abilities. Professional instructors will lead attendees though moves they can bring back to the newsroom. No mat will be required!  Refreshing smoothies and networking close out the session (and there will be Lululemon give-aways!). RSVP today for your spot.

Run! Training for a road race, or just love to run and want some company? ONA runners, plan to meet up each morning at 6:30 a.m. in the lobby of the ONA host hotel, the Hyatt Regency at Colorado Convention Center. The run will begin promptly at 7 a.m. Here’s the schedule:

  • Thursday, Sept. 15: Distance 4 miles
  • Friday, Sept. 16: Distance 6 miles
  • Saturday, Sept. 17: Distance 18-20 miles (some will be doing 6 miles)

Due to altitude adjustments, plan to run at about a nine- to 10-minute pace. Contact @nancycasanova@brittanykamalei or @alliwsj with any questions. They even have a hashtag:

And don’t forget to wear sunscreen! There’s 25 percent less protection from the sun in Denver than at sea level, and the city boasts 300 days of sunshine each year.

pool

The indoor pool at the ONA16 host hotel has a mountain view.

Inside fitness: The Hyatt Regency also has an excellent gym, indoor heated lap pool and a hot tub on the sun deck, overlooking the mountains.

Bike it: . Denver B-cycle — Denver’s bike-sharing system — has 88 stations and 700 bikes throughout 10 central Denver neighborhoods (including near the host hotel at 1550 Glenarm); a 24-hour pass is $9 and offers unlimited 30-minute, station-to-station trips.
