Pitch an ONA16 Lightning Talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/vhs-positive-vhspositive-3o7qE4opCd6f1NJeuY\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Every ONA conference is driven by ideas from the digital journalism community. In the spring, we take session pitches through the Suggestion Box, and throughout the spring and summer, the Program Team\u00a0helps select and build out sessions. Now, just before the conference, we\u2019re opening up two more ways to get involved: the <a href=\"http:\/\/onalightningtalks.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lightning Talks<\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"http:\/\/onaunconference.tumblr.com\/pitch\" target=\"_blank\">Unconference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve got an idea for a full-blown conference session,\u00a0you should pitch the unconference. <strong>If you\u2019ve got a big idea to share\u00a0and the guts to present it in five minutes or less, send us your lightning talk by Thursday, September 15.<\/strong><span id=\"more-35624\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The best part about lightning talks is that they are exciting, fast, \u00a0invigorating and full of good ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you do:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Figure out what you want to talk about. \u00a0(A highlight reel on a great project, your side hustle that no one knows about yet, a love letter to your favorite beat\u00a0\u2026 the\u00a0sky\u2019s the limit, as long as you\u2019re PASSIONATE about it).<\/li>\n<li>Pitch your idea to the <a href=\"http:\/\/onalightningtalks.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ONA16 Lightning Talks<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Convince your friends and other conference attendees to vote for your session. You can use <strong>#ONA16lt<\/strong> to join the conversation on social or our main conference hashtag, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23ONA16&amp;src=typd\" target=\"_blank\">#ONA16<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Vote for your own session and other lightning talks you want to see. Voting takes place\u00a0at the conference on Friday.<\/li>\n<li>When you win, (as you will since you will have submitted an exciting\u00a0idea that you are passionate\u00a0about and people are fascinated\u00a0by), \u00a0prep your lightning talk! Keep it under five minutes and get to the point quickly! No need for lots of background\u00a0\u2014 explain your idea\u00a0as quickly as possible. If you make a presentation, use it to show\u00a0the audience good examples and great jokes. Don\u2019t create a slide deck\u00a0of every word you are going to say.
