At ONA16, there&#8217;s a strong focus on projects and tools developed with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ona16.journalists.org\/track\/audience-engagement-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">audience engagement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in mind to give newsrooms insight into what matters to their communities. Whether you want to know more about tools for increasing audience interaction, creating stronger communities, generating more empathy in your viewers or reaching new audiences, you\u2019ll find lots of resources to help you in deciding where to invest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Digital media is telling stories in a variety of ways that can reach a wider, more diverse audience. One of our sessions explores how <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ona16.journalists.org\/sessions\/snapocalypse\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">features like Snapchat Discover, Facebook Instant Articles and Apple News provide a place to do this<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and what this means for publishers. <\/span><b>P. Kim Bui<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, reported.ly\u2019s deputy managing editor;\u00a0<\/span><b>Ashley Codianni<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, CNN\u2019s director of social media;\u00a0<\/span><b>Justin Ellis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, ESPN\u2019s senior editor and <\/span><b>Versha Sharma<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, NowThis\u2019 managing editor, will discuss how to create successful distributed content, while also relinquishing control over elements like design and data on your audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Founders at the Coral Project talked to over 300 people from nearly 150 news organizations in more than 30 countries about comments over the past year, followed by a year building tools to create strong communities around journalism. We\u2019re very excited to have <\/span><b>Greg Barber<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, director of digital news projects from The Washington Post;\u00a0<\/span><b>Sydette Harry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, community lead and <\/span><b>Andrew Losowsky<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, project lead, both from The Coral Project, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ona16.journalists.org\/sessions\/coralproject\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">talk about their experiences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. They will also focus on common misperceptions about comments, studies to help you make informed decisions and demonstrate open-source software to create and enliven communities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s become apparent that audiences don\u2019t just want to receive news in multiple mediums, they also want to connect in a variety of ways. <\/span><b>Monica Guzman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a 2016 Nieman Foundation Fellow;\u00a0<\/span><b>Dheerja Kaur,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> head of product at theSkimm;\u00a0<\/span><b>Terry Parris Jr.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, community editor at ProPublica and <\/span><b>Josh Stearns<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, associate director of the Public Square Program at Democracy Fund, will delve into <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ona16.journalists.org\/sessions\/designingconversations\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">creating a unique conversation around the news,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> while dealing with the technological, ethical and editorial issues you face using these tools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Friday, <\/span><b>Stephanie Clary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, managing editor at Breaking News, and <\/span><b>Sam Mandel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, CEO and partner of Poncho\/Betaworks, will continue the conversation about tools <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ona16.journalists.org\/sessions\/bots\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by examining the latest trend &#8212; bots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. They\u2019re new, easy to transport and have their own personalities. Using USA TODAY\u2019s 10-event \u201cvariety show\u201d format series as a guide, our speakers &#8212;\u00a0<\/span><b>Megan Finnerty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, director of Storytellers Brand Studio\/Gannett, and <\/span><b>Liz Nelson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, senior director of audience engagement strategy at the USA TODAY NETWORK &#8212; will focus on the kinds of emotional and dedicated connections you can create with an audience by hosting events like these. They will also offer practical tips and suggestions for what it takes to pull off your own event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year, more than ever, the election is always on our minds.
