DENVER \u2014 Superlative reporting on leaked data, prison reform and undue police force led coverage that garnered top honors for 35 media organizations Saturday night at the 2016 Online Journalism Awards<\/a><\/strong>, which ended the Online News Association Conference.<\/p>\n At the 16th annual awards dinner, emceed by NPR\u2019s Al Letson, The Texas Tribune<\/strong>, Quartz<\/strong>, AJ+ Digital News Publishing<\/strong> and The New York Times<\/strong> each took home a $3,000 General Excellence Award, courtesy of the Gannett Foundation. The $15,000 University of Florida Awards for Investigative Data Journalism were won by The Intercept\u2019s “The Drone Papers”<\/strong>\u00a0and The Orlando Sentinel<\/strong> for “Focus on Force: An Investigation In Use of Force by the Orlando Police Department<\/strong>.” The Panama Papers, an exhaustive examination by over 100 media outlets of secretive offshore companies, led by The Center for Public Integrity\u2019s International Consortium of Investigative Journalists<\/strong>, took top honors in the Investigative category.<\/p>\n The Knight Award for Public Service, with a $5,000 prize from the Knight Foundation, went to The Huffington Post<\/strong> for “Prisons Reporting<\/strong>.” Breaking News won the $5,000 Gannett Technical Innovation in the Service of Digital Journalism Award for its news tip-sharing app, \u201cNearby Tipping.\u201d Oregon Public Broadcasting<\/strong> and The New York Times<\/strong> dominated the Breaking News categories and New York Magazine<\/strong> was honored in the Large Feature category for its bold, compelling presentation of \u201cCosby: The Women.\u201d<\/p>\n ONA also named documentary photographer and freelance photojournalist Sima Diab<\/strong> the recipient of the 2016 James Foley Award for Conflict Reporting<\/strong> for her unflinching coverage of the lives and living conditions of Arabs around the world.
